In his third solo exhibition, artist Parag Tandel showcases a series of sculptures cast in resin that represent shapes and colours from memories of his childhood. As a member of Mumbai’s Koli community, his works reflect the change in the seascape of the city over the years and focus on ideas of ecology and migration through the vivid imagery of sea creatures, both real and imagined. The sculptures invoke a mystical, almost mythical representation of underwater life, and prompt the viewer to think about how these changes may affect our immediate future.

If you were planning to spend International Beer Day bar hopping around in honour of your favourite brew, then Andheri’s Brewbot has made the logistics simpler for you, thanks to their Craft Beer Weekender. Spread over August 6th and 7th, they will host five breweries from around the state, with around 20 different types of craft brews on offer. Hic hic hurray, indeed! In keeping with the theme of the festival – unity – the 5,000 sq ft space will accommodate beer garden-style community tables. The idea, we’re told, is to encourage people to look beyond standard OTC beers and learn to appreciate the nuances of craft brews and folks behind them. Participating breweries include Independence Brewing Company, Doolally Taproom and Effingut Brewerkz from Pune along with Mumbai’s Gateway Brewing Co, White Owl Brewery and of course, Brewbot. Whether you’re a confirmed craft beer snob or a cautious newbie, there’s plenty to sample – from German Hefeweizen and IPAs to stouts, porters, ciders and meads. You’ll also get a chance to vote for their favourite style, after which each brewery will prepare their own version, creating the first crowdsourced craft brew. You can also dig into beer-infused pub grub such as sliders, hot dogs, poutine and fries, or pick something from the live BBQ counter. To keep spirits high, the team has also partnered with Sony Music to curate a special playlist divided into three different moods that will run through the day – expect to sing along to some classic and alt rock favourites. You’ll also be able to go on tours of the brewery, and can learn the finer points of beer making as well as try out a few samples. So bring out those beer tinted glasses and get ready for an ale-good time! When: August 6th to 7th, noon to 11.30 pm

Bastian

DECOR A narrow, staircase takes you into the two-floored Bandra restaurant. There’s a riot of fishy and kitschy adornments – an enormous crocodile mounted on the wall, crabs et al. The wooden furniture gives Bastian a warm and comfortable feel. FOOD Sure seafood with a modern Asian spin is the focus, but there is also chicken and lamb and fifty per cent of the menu is vegetarian. Go for the small plates. Vibrant ponzu and jalapeno sparkle the Norwegian Salmon and it’s the sesame, soy, sambal and lime juice that enliven the Sushi grade Tuna and Avocado. Avocado salsa on the Butter Poached Lobster delights. The vegetarian fare wows. Shimeji, enoki, king, portobello and button mushrooms, that are silky, velvety with butter and white wine.  Crunchy rice spiked Spicy Eggplant Tartare with miso glaze seduces. What gems of wizardry emerge from the tandoor – pineapple charred with the kiss of butter and kick of togarashi, Maple Glazed Sweet Potato, Teriyaki Broccoli and more. From the market menu (pick seafood and pair with one of six sauces) we try the Mud Crab (huge portions) in delicious South East Asian coconut curry and mop it up with fried mantou. The choice of breads surprises – from naans and rotis to steamed Chinese bread to a giant sea salt pretzel. There are only cheesecakes on dessert menu.  It’s the Creme Brûlée Cheesecake with its crackly crust that comes up tops. MINUS POINTS Bastian prides itself as a seafood restaurant but it offers only a limited variety of seafood. Plans to expand variety are underway. The desserts disappoint, Highly priced (Rs 500) small wedges, too experimental (Black Pepper Honey Cheesecake), or too stodgy (Turtle Cheesecake). The authentic Singapore style crab missing. The service can get inattentive. MY POINT Exuberantly inventive. The gifted chefs Kelvin Cheung and Boo Kwang Kim revel in big flavour pay offs. creative flourishes and an impressive attention to detail, be it the seafood or the vegetarian fare.  It’s packed even on a Tuesday night. Kudos to Mr and Mrs Cheung (who are always in-house) for your two-month old baby, Bastian, with its gastronomic muscle, and boy, I love its swagger!
