Eateries For Your Next Lonavala Trip

Be it a summer afternoon, rainy day or a gorgeous winter morning, the neighbourhood hill station of Lonavala comes as a blessing when we need a quick getaway. From school trips to family vacations and now overnighters with friends, this small town never fails to please. If you’ve been fuelling up at highway eateries all these years and are bored by the option, we’ve got a list of recommended eateries that you can try on your next stint there. German Bakery Wunderbar When it comes to breakfast, Rama Krishna has always been a natural pick for most people, but if you want to indulge in a hearty English breakfast, we suggest you opt for German Bakery Wunderbar. This Pune import lives up to its reputation and serves the same menu as its other outlets. From AM treats, wood fired pizza and one-pot meals to snacks and burgers – you get it all. They also serve an extensive cocktail menu available by the pitcher, making it a perfect spot for that lazy Sunday brunch. Mumbai folks now no longer need to go all the way to Pune for those butter laden Shrewsbury biscuits either, as they stock a few boxes at the dessert counter. As for ambience, the fresh hues of green and blue paired with white give the space a beach house feel. Price: Rs 1,000 for two Timings: 8 am to 11.30 pm Contact: 094044 74224 Phase Bai’s Homely Food As the name suggests, expect home food made with love here. With no fuss interiors, you’ll be dining under a makeshift tin shed with marble top tables that will remind you of old school canteens. The eatery is tucked away in a lane next to Hotel Hari International and isn’t easy to spot, so keep can eye out. At the diner, you’re offered a one page menu with Maharashtrian fare starting from breakfast (9.30am to 10.30am) followed by a lunch section, available till 3.30pm. We suggest larger group call them in advance, as they only make a fixed quantity for every service and run out of food quickly. Our staple here is the Chicken Masala (Rs 300) and Cauliflower Curry (Rs 200) followed by hot chapattis that come in a roti box, just like the one at home. We also recommend you try their fried fish (they serve paplet) along with a chilled glass of Solkadhi (Rs 100). With an all women kitchen, the place will remind you of mom’s cooking! Price: Rs 300 for two Timings: 9.30 am to 3.30 pm Contact: 0211-4270802 Buvachi Missal If you sit with a bunch of Maharashtrians, you will always find them comparing missals from Nasik, Pune and Mumbai. While each is perfect in their own way, they vary in the spice department. There is one place though that has managed to bridge the gap between all three, and that’s Buwachi Missal. Unlike other breakfast spots that serve a range of snacks, this one channelises all its energy into making a perfect curry layered with poha, chiwda, usal topped with coriander, tomatoes and onion. The set up looks like a factory line in the kitchen, but at a price of Rs 50, who cares! The missal can be extra spicy here and if you’re a first timer, we suggest you inform the cashier to keep it moderate. Weekends are usually packed, so go with some time in hand. Price: Rs 100 for two Timings: 9 am to 7.30 pm (7 am onwards on Sunday) Contact: 094223 50836 Parsi Dhaba Parsi food always brings a smile to our face, so coupled with a holiday, it feels like a match made in heaven. Della Adventure Resort has added some much-needed spunk to the hill station by giving us a heap load of fun things to do while there. From water sports to crazy rides, there are games for every age. And now, you can follow all that up with an indulgent meal at their in-house dhaba. Start with egg preparations like Sali Par Eedu or the humble Akuri and Mutton Cutlets. For mains, opt for classics such as Chicken Farcha, Masoor Ma Ghosh or Patra Ni Machhi and end your meal with a silky Lagan Nu Custard. Price: Rs 1,000 for two Timings: 12.30 pm to 2 am Contact: 022-67451400

China Inc

Located at the recently opened Taj Santacruz, China Inc offers a glimpse into the diverse world of Chinese and, more particularly, Sichuan cuisine. Though it opened without much fanfare, I’m sure its convenient location at the Taj Santacruz near the domestic airport will entice many a curious patron. My fellow diners and I ate our way through the delicious menu and promptly returned for seconds.   Decor The decor is vibrant and colourful. A colourful dragon – made of multi-coloured lamps that look like Holi water balloons –  winding across the ceiling made quite the statement. Food To begin with, order a plateful of the delicate, thin-skinned dimsum – meat-eaters can pick from the Lobster Topped with Fish Roe and the Chilean Seabass Dumpling, while vegetarians can try the Crystal Dumpling. The half-moons of flaky Beijing Onion Cake are delicious. In fact, those missing the Taj Golden Dragon will be delighted to find the Wothib Asparagus, the robustly spiced Congee Crispy Lamb and the sweet-spicy Chicken Supreme Chili Oyster Sauce. The unusual Prawn in Oats, the flavoursome and falling off the bone Lamb Shank in Tobaijan House Sauce and Tofu with Chili Pepper Sauce that is done to perfection are recommended. End your meal with delicious, small triangles of crisp Date Pancake. Minus Points The Steamed Fish was overcooked, while the Lemon Chicken was undercooked. The Yellow Cheddar and Mushroom Dumpling and Edamame and Truffle Dumpling are avoidable. Also steer clear of the oversweet Milk Cake and Chocolate Cake that come with hard batter-fried shells. My Point Brand new China Inc’s mix of Sichuan and Cantonese fare delights, though some dishes miss the mark as does the decor. I am sure that China Inc will give a lot of Chinese restaurants in the city a run for their money.
