Cheers! And cheers again! I raise a double toast to welcome Breach Candy’s rocking new entrant. Not just because its name is Doppio (double shot of espresso) but also because it combines two elements effortlessly…comfort and sophistication. Both in the ambiance and menu. It was packed when we dine here and happily it’s a mixed crowd.
DECOR
We love the room which has a lived-in, age-softened feel. It’s an elegant black and white splice of a sophisticated comfy living room, speakeasy, antique store and a literary salon.
Beautifully lit space, small tables, booths, sofas…a bar area et al.
FOOD
Okay! So Doppio takes the coffee in it’s name seriously and so should you… Start with a heady coffee based cocktail (Espresso Martinis, Rum Cappuccinos, Whisky Lattes) and end with the delightful Coffee based Affogato Dessert. Refreshing avocado on toast followed by golden fried tempura prawns and chicken enlivened with nigella are recommended.
Go for the healthy and yum option main of chicken lightly done with basil and paired with brown rice, robust Lamb Bolognaise. Cooked to perfection Atlantic Salmon. End with the delightfully different strawberries in mulled wine topped off by swirls of creamy marscapone.
MINUS
Open only at night, table seating which is inflexible are some of the downsides.Though beautifully presented, the burrata was hard and dry, And the jerk fish lacked flavour, ditto for the overdone grilled chicken. Though I#39;m yet to try the Lobster Benedict and the chicken and waffles, the menu could do with some additions.
MY POINT
Sophisticated yet comforting. That’s the ambiance of this pretty black and white room and when the dishes hit the mark, the cooking appealingly complements that atmosphere. The bar and the great music (the tempo picks up with the night) fuse seamlessly to serve up that vibe. Now, we just hope Doppio continues to consistently serve up it’s double shot of sophistication and comfort. Right now it certainly is the toast of the town! Cheers!
