Zaffran

It’s come a long way since this popular and hugely loved North Indian Zaffran opened in Crawford Market. Zaffran now has around eight branches in the city, with a ninth one opening soon in Andheri, we are informed. Soaring ceilings and sweeping stone arches (reminiscent of the Mughals), Zaffran is now more stylish and grandiose. The Lower Parel Zaffran is housed in a large twin-levelled space and modern Mughal domes (which look a bit like birdcages) adorn the ground floor tables. The first floor here doubles up as a banquet hall and the decor is simpler and more functional. Visit Zaffran for the succulent and robustly spiced Raan, Machhi Tikka, Murgh Banjara Kebab, meltingly soft Galouti Kebab, masala-rich Handi Gosht, Subz Handi Dum, flavoursome Nihari Gosht and delightfully lingering Chicken Biryani! Ask for the signature Paneer Makhni with its luscious tomato and Kasoori Methi, which is worth trying as is its non-vegetarian chicken version. Veggies must also try the sinfully tangy-yet-sweet Aloo Taouk Chaat. Cheese-filled Lucknavi Seekh Kebabs and Nihari Gosht are must tries for non-vegetarians. Inconsistent Gosht Biryani and sometimes some items on the menu are not available. Superlative Indian desserts that delight, luscious orbs of Chhena Payesh, Zaffrani Phirni or Kulfi Payesh. Great destination for moderately priced, tasty Indian fare. Critic reviews are anonymous and all bills are paid by them.
