We are in the midst of the festive season and while everyone is in a holiday mood, theatre lovers in the city have even more reason to celebrate as the much loved Prithvi Theatre Festival is just a couple of days away. So head over to Juhu for some great stories – with breaks for plenty of cups of Prithvi Cafe’s famous Sulemani chai, of course.
WHAT IS IT
Named after the legendary actor, Prithviraj Kapoor, Prithvi Theatre has been an incubator and nurturer for generations of talent. The festival is an annual property – now in its 38th year – that not only celebrates fine storytelling but also pays tribute to the site on the anniversary of its inception. This edition kicks off on November 3rd and will go on till the 14th.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The line-up this year is rather promising, with 13 of the city’s best theatre companies who will present 32 of their finest plays. Must-watch performances include Tpot Production’s Mayday that is based on the true events behind the ill-fated flight MH 17 which was shot down over Ukraine in 2014. Naseeruddin Shah#39;s Motley Productions will present Riding Madly Off in All Directions, a collage of pieces inspired by the works of political scientist and humourist Stephen Leacock. Nadira Zaheer Babbar’s Ekjute production will stage Meri Maa Ke Haath – A Journey of an Extraordinary Woman. Directed by Makarand Deshpande, it is based on the life of Babbar’s late mother, Urdu author Razia Sajjad Zaheer. From Yatri, there’s Hum Panch – a story about a mother and her four daughters whom she raises all by herself – directed by Om Katare, while Makarand Deshpande#39;s Ansh Theatre Group will premiere a fresh take on the Bard’s tragedy, King Lear, with Shakespearecha Mhatara.
Also in store is a neo-classical music performance by Artie’s, a music society from France led by violinist Gauthier Herrmann. On the Indian front, is an Indian classical music recital by Pancham Nishad, a mesmerising Kathak performance by Sanjukta Sinha along with Prithvi Carnival performances by various productions. Other highlights include Fringe Theatre productions, discussions with eminent theatre artistes and Urdu mehfils.
