Mezzo Mezzo

I’m rejoicing! I’m romancing the ‘regions’. It’s wonderful to be served up authentic Italian regional cuisine. And doing so, is the new chef of JW Marriott’s Mezzo Mezzo.  Matteo Arvonio brings with him not only his regional ingredients and flavours but also serves them with flair. Regional flavours delight… be it the combination of Almond-crusted Red Sweet Shrimps (Sicilian-inspired) and Piedmont-influenced, crispy Sea Scallop, and  Bagna Cauda. Vegetarians have plenty too… from Piedmont the Red Wine-poached Pear with Gorgonzola and Mascarpone. Bringing whiffs of Veneto and Piedmont is the home-made Radicchio and fresh Goat Cheese Ravioli, Roasted Pepper Coulis, aromatic fried herbs. Veggies must try the Parmigiana Leggera, Oven-baked Zucchini, Eggplant Parmigiana, Parmesan and Tomato Sauce.  Interestingly, it’s the rich Arab influence of Trapani (Sicily) that leads to the pairing of couscous with the Pan-seared Chilean Seabass and Mussels Guazzetto... western coast of Sicily. It’s the Suckling Pig which is the star of the show here, it is cooked and paired in two different ways. Using the more modern suos-vide and slow-cooked technique:  one inspired from the Roman porchetta, rolled with lardon and fresh herbs; the second inspired by Sicily, pork is marinated with juniper and served with a jus combined with a bitter dark chocolate. The skin is served crispy and crackling and gives a different and crunchy texture. I am thrilled to find my favourite Light-textured Bonet here.   The Piemonte’s Chocolate and Amaretto Pudding, Caramel and Blueberries Sauce is sparkled with Fernet Branca liquor. The wooden floor-lit bridge and bustling open kitchen of this contemporary, first-floored, three-levelled Italian restaurant is as spiffy as ever. For casual dining, opt for the wooden level and the carpeted one for a more formal experience. Sit by the window for a stunning view of the garden and ocean or opt for the more cosy banquet seating.  PS: They are open from 12.30pm to 4pm on Sundays for brunches, à la carte menu. Critic Review Nightlife Review Buzz: 2.5/5| Décor: 4/5 Sit at the long, bustling bar counter and knock back a few drinks at Mezzo Mezzo, which offers a variety of cocktails such as Apple and Raisin Mojito, JW House Tea, Purple Tang, Daze Bellini, Caipiroska, Sangrias, Cosmos, Martini, Maika, Caipirinha, Litchi Caipirinha, Carrot Lemonade, Flavoured Daiquiri, Aviation, Flavoured Margarita, Flight Cars, Flavoured Martini and Bubbly to name a few! Also try the Tignanello, Brunello, Barbaresco, Chianti, Barolo, Frascati and Prosecco. Go over the floor-lit bridge, past the bustling open kitchen and enter this large, contemporary, three-levelled Italian restaurant. Wood and natural stone are offset by sleek, black candles and fresh flowers. Check the Restaurant guide for more details.
